John 6:16-18
"When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them."
It's notable that Jesus can only be in one place at a time because He's in bodily form, at least it seems that way. I see no evidence in the New Testament to the contrary.
Hebrews 2:9 "But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while.."
omnipresence
The ability to be at all places at the same time; usually only attributed to God.
If you put yourself in the disciples sandals and add approximately three years of close contact with Jesus, it's no wonder they were frightened at the prospect of His departure.
John 16:7 "But what I tell you is true. It will be better for you if I go away. Because, if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, I will send him to you."
Thinking of life without Him by your side, guiding you and protecting you would be a thought you'd rather not entertain. Being human, there's no way that this seems like a better deal, even though it's being said by Jesus. However, this thought is what makes the reality we live in so sweet!
Colossians 1:27 "To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory."
Now, the Spirit of Christ resides in us as Christians. Even though we might think at times it would be better to have Jesus with us physically, His words ring true, "It will be better for you if I go away." Now we are lead by His Spirit. This doesn't mean we are without choice. We can choose to sin and when we do we grieve His Spirit that resides in us (Eph 4:30). We have the ability to override His Spirit which is quenching what Jesus would otherwise want for us (1 Thessalonians 5:19).
We should realize how blessed we are that Jesus did leave his heartbroken disciples in order to send His Spirit thereby allowing all of His followers to be portable Christs, Christians which means "little Christ!" ( 1 Cor 6:19 "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own").
Peace to you as you go about your business today, being like Jesus and having Christ living in you!
