John 13:34-35
"I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” NRSV
The text seems simple, but the application isn't easy. This would fall under the category of difficult, but well worth the effort. I'm glad that God doesn't leave us without example; "as I have loved you." He even gives us a list!
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient - Am I patient?
Love is kind - Am I kind?
Love does not envy - Do I envy?
Love does not boast - Do I boast?
Love is not proud - Am I proud?
Love is not rude - Am I rude?
Love is not self-seeking - Am I selfish?
Love is not easily angered - Am I easily angered?
Love keeps no record of wrongs - Do I keep track of wrongs?
Love does not delight in evil - Do I delight in evil?
Love rejoices with the truth - Do I rejoice with the truth?
Love always protects - Do I protect?
Love always trusts - Do I always trust?
Love always hopes - Do I always hope?
Love always perseveres - Do I always persevere?
The most important advertisement for the church and the best thing for us to be known for is love!
